Notable Maltese Americans in the History of the San Francisco Bay Area

A selection of 225 noted Maltese Americans —

The famous, infamous, and some just interesting

A note of appreciation: This compilation below of "noted" individuals is in no way to underestimate the importance of all the persons who were the heart and soul of the Maltese community in the Bay Area. These were the men who were primarily common laborers or blue collar workers (who were often proud union members) and the women who were the homemakers and volunteers, who ensured that their children got a good meal, went to church, got a good education, spent time playing at the beach or at games, and helped them assimilate to the new American culture, whose individual stories and achievements are lost to history because that story did not end up in a newspaper article or an obituary, where those listed below were discovered by this researcher. My praise goes first of all to these individuals for creating the Maltese American community of the last 100 years. Unfortunately, the majority below are men, given the fact that obituaries rarely talked about the accomplishments of Maltese women. After 1970, there is a dramatic shift in educational achievement among the children of the first generations of the Maltese in the SF BayArea, with many of these individuals becoming college graduates and becoming employed in a wide variety of businesses and professions. This shift is evident in the list below.

This list has been enhanced by additional contributions by Mona Nicholas.

If you would like to nominate anyone for this list, please email me (charlesvella@gmail.com).
